A BLACK HISTORY CELEBRATION

Slavery is a part of American History that is not likely to go away. For this reason, it should be properly taught in the schools along with the many contributions that African Americans have made to society. Recently, parents in Atlanta, Georgia  were protesting the use of slaves in a Math class. The problem to be solved included the the brutal beatings of slaves as part of the equation. This was a major distraction and a problem because many of the Fifth Graders did not know what a slave was or what slavery was about. This is one of the reasons that much emphasis on Black History should be readily available in the school's Libraries and classrooms.
I recommend a very good source (that is years ahead of its time)  for students in Grades 5-12. Published in 2008, it covers Africa to Barack Obama.www.Xlibris.com/ReparationsforSlavery.html

Slaves used as part of Math problem upset Atlanta Parents

Parents have every right to be concerned about their children's education as much as their children's Health, and there is enough distraction in our school system like Bullying, suicides, rapes, fights, and Drugs to keep any parent on his/her toes. Concentration, self-esteem and puberty are other concerns that students face in our schools, and to compound this with slavery that many of today's students know little or nothing about is shameful-especially in a Math problem where the most needed concentration is to focus on solving the problem itself. For example: "If  pigs cost  $6.00 dollars each and slaves cost 1/3 as much as pigs, how many slaves and pigs could you buy with $2,400? The problem here is to visualize a slave, if you can, if not, you ask the Teacher who explains to class what a slave is/was. and the Teachers replies, "Well they both were chattel property that was bought and sold at Auction to the highest bidder." The class cracks up with laughter; starts pointing fingers, throwing spit-balls and books-a fight breaks out! The moral of the story is that more African American History needs to be included in the School curriculum, which is a part of American History that won't go away! www.Xlibris.com/ReparationsforSlavery.html
